Program Highlights
Fukushima is the capital city of Fukushima prefecture, japan. It is located in the northern part of Nakadori, the central region of the prefecture. The city is located in the Fukushima basin’s southwest area and nearby mountains. The population is estimated to be 290,064.
This video shows you a digital tour through Daiichi nuclear power plant. With the green program, we will bring you top secret access and a private tour through the historic power plant with industry professionals!
The Japanese tea ceremony is called chanoyu, sado or simply ocha in Japanese. It is a choreographic ritual of preparing and serving Japanese green tea, called matcha, together with traditional Japanese sweets to balance with the bitter taste of the tea. Preparing tea in this ceremony is all about pouring all one’s attention into the predefined movements. The whole process is less about drinking tea, and more about aesthetics, preparing a bowl of tea with intention, love, and care.
Japan is known for its large population of snow monkeys, which descend from the steep surrounding cliffs during the day to sit in the warm hot springs.
Nuclear decommissioning is the process whereby a nuclear power plant site is dismantled to the point that it no longer requires measures for radiation protection. Conduct an experiment with Fukushima college and learn the steps and processes to properly decommission a nuclear power plant.

What our alumni say about The GREEN Program
Harrison Collins
North Carolina State University / NC State
An unforgettable, life-changing experience! Not only did I learn about nuclear science and engineering at a deeper level, but I was exposed to a culture entirely different than my own, offering a new perspective on a world that, to me, always seemed so similar. Having experienced what I did, I can wholeheartedly say, without reservation, that going on this inaugural trip was, and forever will be, one of the greatest decisions I have ever made.
David Evers
University of North Texas
This was the best decision I ever made! The Japan trip with The Green Program changed my life. It's my goal to impact someone's life as positively as The Green Program impacted mine!
Stephanie Lin
McMaster University
A life changing and eye-opening experience. I gained insight about nuclear energy, the damage that was done during the Fukushima incident, and the efforts that have been made to clean-up the remains from the incident. I also gained an appreciation for Japanese culture and their lifestyle. This program was absolutely worthwhile and I would strongly recommend this program.
Samantha Hudson
University of Louisville
I learned so much in the 10 days of the program. It was definitely worth all the effort I made in saving up for this trip!
Mackenzie W
Nuclear Engineering Student, University of Michigan
My life’s dream come true! TGP was so much better than I had imagined. The cultural activities were almost like participating in a homestay, for most of the trip we stayed in traditional hotels and inns (my second favorite part of the trip). The sustainable events were incredible, especially seeing all of the amazing work being done on improving renewable energies, the testing facility for the clean up robots in Daiichi (JAEA), and the radiation coursework at Fukushima Tech. There are so many awesome things to do on this program and the minute I came back to UMich, I told everyone in my class about it.

University of Louisville
I honestly can't put into words how amazing this study abroad was. From learning about the 2011 disaster to being able to see the recovery efforts that the local communities have made first hand, this was an experience of a lifetime. We were able to take a bus tour of the exclusion zone, see the clean-up efforts to collect contaminated top-soil, and we even got a tour of the Daini Nuclear Power-plant. I highly recommend this program to anyone wanting to go abroad, regardless of background or major. TGP truly offers a life-changing experience with their Japan program.
Kevin Y
Sustainability Student, Harvard
An absolutely life changing experience where you get to visit and truly immerse yourself within a community that was devastated by a natural disaster. The curation of the coursework, capstone development, and hands-on interaction and learning truly made the experience one to remember.

Penn State University
Trying to describe The GREEN Program's education program in Japan is hard to do. You experience Japan from a personal one on one perspective with the locals. You learn about the culture first hand. There is no other way to learn about the resilience of the people of Japan and Fukushima than on the ground talking with them. I was able to see where the disaster occurred and was able to attempt to understand the disaster. The kindness and respect given is unlike any other place on Earth.
Rachel T
Leadership for Sustainable Development Student, Queens University Belfast
If you are thinking about going on a trip with TGP, I would say stop thinking about it and just do it! Undoubtedly the most interesting, informative and inspiring 10 days of my life and I have no doubt that this trip will continue to shape me for a long time to come!
Yoana T
Political Science & International Relations Student, University of Bath
My experience in Japan was more than incredible. The whole organisation was perfect, the program was exciting and well-though, a combination of learning from incredible teachers and professionals, immersing in the culture of the locals and getting to know them and their traditions, and having fun by doing a project together, kayaking, doing karaoke and so much more! I also made new amazing friends who taught me so much! I will be forever grateful to the amazing team of The GREEN Program!
