Scholarship applications are reviewed with a few main criteria in mind. Financial need is an important factor for many scholarships, and applicants who demonstrate financial hardship will often be given priority. Additionally, applicants from underserved or disadvantaged backgrounds may also receive special consideration when their applications are evaluated; this includes BIPOC students or those from low-income families. Finally, the quality of the application essay can make a big difference in how scholarship committees view potential recipients; essays should clearly articulate why the student believes they deserve to receive funding and what sets them apart as an applicant. The essay should be well-written with proper grammar and spelling while conveying thoughtful ideas that showcase why they would benefit most from receiving funding over other candidates applying for the same award. Scholarships are reviewed on a rolling basis.

The GREEN Scholarship for BIPOC Students

Program: Any TGP Travel or Online Program
Funding Amount: $500-$4,000
Application Deadline: Accepting on a rolling basis

Nearly 40% of TGP alumni identify as Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC). To create a racially just, diverse, and equitable future, The GREEN Program is committed to increasing the representation of BIPOC participants in international education and the sustainability workforce. This GREEN Scholarship provides financial support to BIPOC participants around the world. BIPOC students attending Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) including Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs), Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCUs), and Asian American and Pacific Islander Serving Institutions (AAPISIs) are strongly encouraged to apply. Scholarships are awarded on a rolling basis throughout the year.

What We Look For: To create a future that is truly sustainable, equitable, and inclusive we need everyone involved. Your lived experience and the forces that have shaped who you are—race, ethnicity, gender identity, gender expression, orientation, disabilities, immigrant status, adventurism, and knowledge about/experience with sustainability issues—are what qualify you to do this work, because each one of us has a unique role to play. Your credentials don’t matter to us as much as sharing more about who you are, the difference you want to make, and how TGP can support you. We also won’t ask for your GPA  because we believe that where you’re headed is more important than where you’ve been.

We invite you to bring the fullness of who you are to your TGP experience—to be you, with us. Please take a few minutes to submit your scholarship application, and tell us how we can best support your learning. We can’t wait to learn about your journey, and how TGP can be a catalyst in your personal and professional growth.

FAQs

Who typically receives scholarship funding?

The GREEN Program’s Scholarship and Fellowship Programs offers financial support to candidates of diverse backgrounds: Ethnic diversity, low-income, first-generation, women in STEM, and LGTBQIA+.

When will I find out if I am awarded a fellowship or scholarship?

Typically, our team will review applications within 7-10 business days and will respond to all candidates two weeks after the application deadline. You can always contact our team at info@thegreenprogram.com.

How do partial scholarships pay for my program fee?

Recipients will have funding allocated to their program fee. To accept the scholarship, recipients must secure their spot with a minimum deposit (non-refundable $500). The recipient is responsible for the program fee’s remaining balance after the scholarship has been allocated. TGP’s standard Terms and Conditions apply.

How competitive are TGP scholarships?

Finances are the #1 barrier keeping students from traveling with TGP. We typically receive a minimum of 100 scholarship applications per round and ask that only serious inquiries apply. Since TGP’s scholarships are partial, we recommend that you consider additional resources, starting with your financial aid advisor.

On paper, I don't qualify for your scholarships and still need financial help. What do you recommend?

We recognize that diversity can be represented in many ways, and family income may not fully represent your story. We recommend that you apply and also consider these additional funding resources.

How do you determine financial need?

Candidates who are selected for a scholarship will be required to provide FAFSA documentation (or similar) to prove financial need in order to receive the scholarship.
