The Climate Finance Program is a unique learning experience focused on understanding and mobilizing climate finance, particularly in regions of the Global South affected by climate change. This program utilizes a hybrid format, including a 6-week online course and a 10-day immersive experience in Jakarta and Bandung, Indonesia. It is designed to equip participants with the knowledge and tools to advocate for and support climate finance initiatives while exploring private investment opportunities for climate mitigation.
Why Indonesia? Indonesia is the fourth most populous nation and the tenth largest economy globally in terms of purchasing power parity. It is projected to become the fourth largest economy by 2045, driven by its significant production of nickel, tin, and bauxite.
- Sustainable Growth: As Indonesia prepares for substantial economic growth, the emphasis on sustainable economic practices and climate finance is crucial for ensuring a resilient and equitable future. The country faces unique environmental challenges due to its status as the world’s largest archipelago, comprising over 17,000 islands.
- Climate Mitigation and Finance: Indonesia’s focus on climate mitigation strategies and innovative finance solutions is essential for mobilizing resources for effective climate action, particularly in emerging markets of the Global South. Collaborations with local experts and climate finance organizations aim to highlight the importance of private climate finance and responsible investing in achieving sustainability.
- Cultural and Ecological Richness: With its vibrant ecosystems and rich cultural heritage, Indonesia serves as an inspiring backdrop for those committed to contributing to the global transition towards a green economy.
Course Description
The GREEN Program’s 2025 Climate Finance Program, in collaboration with the Climate Finance Fund, offers a comprehensive 10-day immersive experience in Java, Indonesia, focusing on climate finance initiatives in the Global South.
Participants will engage in a blend of educational activities, including a 6-week pre-travel virtual course titled “Investing for a Sustainable Environment,” and interactive sessions with industry experts on community-based climate finance initiatives.
Through hands-on experiences, including a community-led service-learning project and interdisciplinary Capstone Project addressing sustainability challenges, participants will develop the knowledge and skills necessary to advocate for impactful climate finance initiatives. This program emphasizes collective action and equips participants to mobilize resources effectively while fostering a community of engaged advocates.
Upon completion, students will receive a Certificate of Completion from TGP, which includes job analytics to connect their newly acquired skills with current job opportunities.
*Note that while this program is not credit-bearing, it may be eligible for credit at participants’ home universities or institutions. Accepted students can find detailed information about the course in the Course Catalog available through their Student Portal.
Eligibility & Time Commitment
Participants must be 18 years or older to travel. This program welcomes university students, non-matriculating students, professionals, and retirees, fostering a diverse group of participants. Applicants should express their interest in climate finance in the Global South within their program application.
While open to all, individuals in the U.S. Diaspora community with connections to the Global are encouraged to apply.
Time Commitment:
Part 1: Online Course Duration: 6 weeks (Remote): May 19 – June 30, 2025
Meeting Frequency: Live sessions will be held every other week.
- Combination of 30-60 minutes of self-study and
- 90-minute live Zoom sessions every other week (Total: 3)
Part 2: Travel: 10-Day program in Indonesia
Objectives and Outcomes
The objective of the Climate Finance Program is to empower participants with the knowledge and skills to advocate for and mobilize private climate finance initiatives that support sustainable development and climate mitigation efforts in the Global South.
Pre-Program Online Course: “Investing for a Sustainable Environment” | 6 Weeks
This is a three-part series developed by two Chartered Financial Analysts (CFAs) dedicated to redirecting financial flows to support environmental health and sustainability. Drawing on their extensive knowledge, experience, and passion for the subject, they designed the course to be delivered through a blend of self-study and interactive large and small group meetings.
Outcomes: By the end of the online course, participants will have:
- Discussed investment opportunities that support and strengthen environmental sustainability across all asset classes
- Worked with the resources you need to consider shifting your cash so you can bank for good
- Learned how to research broad market stock and bond funds that are fossil-free or that seek positive environmental impact in other ways
- Discovered investment opportunities in the private markets and alternative investment spaces that can further the positive environmental impact you make with your money
- Made decisions about the next steps you want to take in your environmental investment journey and the assets you want to use in support of those goals
By the end of the program, participants will:
- Understand private climate finance and advocate for increased climate finance in the Global South, while exploring retail investment opportunities that prioritize climate mitigation and sustainability.
- Engage in impactful community building, leveraging collective voices to drive climate finance initiatives and foster ongoing collaboration among participants.
- Acquire practical knowledge and skills in climate finance and local stakeholder engagement, enhancing the ability to contribute to a sustainable future.
- Research and identify investment opportunities across asset classes, including fossil-free stock and bond funds, as well as private market and alternative investments that support environmental sustainability.
- Participate in hands-on experiences through service learning and citizen science initiatives, developing essential skills such as problem-solving, intercultural collaboration, and leadership while focusing on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Most of the program fees are subsidized by The Climate Finance Fund, which aims to mobilize capital for climate solutions. As a result of their support, participants are only required to pay a nominal fee of $500. We encourage individuals from Diaspora communities in the United States who have ties to the Global South to apply and participate.

- Service Learning: A portion of your program fee contributes to a service-learning initiative that collaborates with a locally-led environmental project.
- Capstone Project: Facilitation for your group’s innovation project to help prepare you for the final project presentation.
- Adventure Excursions & Cultural Immersion: Discover Indonesia’s diverse wildlife, embark on exhilarating hikes, and immerse yourself in the country’s vibrant culture, delicious cuisine, and rich heritage.
- Meals: We support locally owned restaurants, and will accommodate most dietary preferences/restrictions. Please note that there may be several opportunities for free time during which meals are not included. This allows you the flexibility to explore local dining options or enjoy a meal at your leisure.
- Accommodations: Your home away from home will be at locally owned lodging sites throughout your program. (Double rooms with opportunities to upgrade upon availability.)
- All in-country transportation: All in-country transportation and airport transfers within program travel guidelines.
- Private Guides and Staff: Dedicated guides and staff will provide 24/7 on-program support and emergency response services.
