As The GREEN Program (TGP) prepares to welcome our next cohort of changemakers, we know that the current U.S. federal government shutdown may be raising questions and concerns, especially for those traveling soon.
While the aviation system remains operational, travelers may experience delays, longer lines, or occasional disruptions. Here’s what’s happening, what it means for your trip, and how you can prepare.
What’s Happening Right Now
Even during a government shutdown, agencies like the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) continue essential operations. Flights are still running, and air travel remains safe.
However, staffing shortages and high demand are leading to:
- Longer airport lines at TSA checkpoints
- Delays and occasional cancellations caused by reduced air traffic control capacity
- Slower baggage and security processing, especially at major U.S. airports
According to recent reports, the FAA has reduced flight capacity in some busy airports to maintain safety standards. While this ensures safety, it can contribute to schedule changes and travel delays.

How This Might Affect Your Program Travel
Depending on your flight route, you may experience:
- Flight delays or cancellations, particularly for U.S. domestic legs or connections
- Longer check-in and security times, so plan to arrive early
- Possible rescheduling of arrival logistics if your group travels together or has planned airport transfers
The GREEN Program will work with you to monitor your flights. If a disruption affects our program schedule, please communicate with us promptly, and we’ll work together to ensure a smooth transition.
Practical Steps if Your Flight Is Delayed or Disrupted
If you experience a delay or cancellation, here’s what to do:
Check your airline’s mobile app or website first.
Before heading to the airport, review the latest updates on your airline’s Flight Status page or mobile app. Airlines are working around the clock to minimize disruptions and will post the most accurate, real-time information there.
Review airline travel alerts.
Many airlines post systemwide alerts with flexible rebooking or waiver options during periods of disruption. Visit your airline’s “Travel Alerts” page for current notices and options.
Know your rebooking and refund options.
Most airlines will automatically rebook you on the next available flight if your original one is canceled. In some cases of disruption, you may also be eligible for a full refund if you choose not to travel.
Contact The GREEN Program.
Notify us as soon as you know your new flight details so we can adjust airport pick-up and program logistics as needed. We’ve built buffer time into program schedules and will adapt as needed if arrival times shift.
Travel Insurance Recommendations
We strongly encourage you to have travel insurance that includes coverage for flight delays, cancellations, and missed connections.
- Before booking your flight: Some policies allow you to purchase “cancel for any reason” coverage only if you buy insurance within a short window after booking (often 14–21 days).
- After booking, before flying: You can still buy standard travel insurance that covers delays, cancellations, medical emergencies, lost baggage, or missed connections through your airline or a third-party insurance provider (i.e. Allianz, Travel Guard, World Nomads, etc)
- Through a credit card: Many premium travel credit cards automatically provide limited travel insurance if you pay for the ticket with the card.
- Always read the policy details carefully. Some plans may not cover delays caused by government shutdowns unless explicitly stated.
Keep all documentation.
Save your receipts, emails, and messages from the airline. These may be needed for reimbursement through your airline or travel insurance.
Stay flexible.
If you face significant delays, remain patient and adaptable. We’ll work with you to ensure a smooth arrival and minimize the impact on your experience.
Tips to Help You Travel Smoothly
Here’s what you can do to minimize disruption and travel confidently:
✅ Consider arriving at your program destination early.
For a smoother start to your program experience, plan to arrive 1–2 days ahead of your program’s start date. This buffer can help you manage potential flight delays and begin your program feeling rested and ready.
✅ Check your flight status early and often.
Use your airline’s app or website for real-time updates and gate changes.
✅ Arrive at the airport early.
Plan to be there at least three hours or more before international flights and two hours or more before domestic flights. The earlier you can arrive, the better.
✅ Pack essentials in your carry-on.
Include medications, important documents, and one change of clothes in case of baggage delays.
✅ Share your travel itinerary with TGP.
You’ll be asked to submit your flight details with us in your registration forms. This allows our team to track your flight and coordinate support if needed.
✅ Stay connected & 24/7 Support
The week before your travel, you’ll receive access to your program’s WhatsApp group and your program leader’s phone number and email. Reach out to our team anytime for support. Our team will be available throughout your travel window to assist with any changes or emergencies. We’ve built buffer time into program schedules and will adapt as needed if arrival times shift.
✅ Be patient and kind.
Everyone at the airport is doing their best under challenging circumstances. Approach the situation with empathy and flexibility.
